I was thinking about making some wax and sawdust or dryer lint firestarters because I hear they work great. But then I got to thinking why waste the time? Aren't eh store bought stuff just as good and are pretty cheap? What about trioxane bars? Are these any good? I thought the bar was really a paste, bt I bought some at a gun show and it's as hard as a rock. What do you guys think?

I have been collecting dryer lint for a while and putting it in some old empty plastic snuff cans. Several years ago I bought a kit just to see what all was included, and found the magnesium? to make the sparks, a piece of rope, and a few pieces of wood. In my hunting kit I carry water proof matches and a candle. I do have quite a few packages of Trioxane, but haven't used it more than once. It too worked pretty well as I remember. NR

Over the last sixty some odd years I've had the occasion to use a LOT of trioxane or other mililtary heat tablets. Nope they're not a paste. They are hard. Make sure that when you use them the area is well ventilated. The fumes can be like tear gas if the flame starts to smother! To make a stove for them punch a few holes around the top edge of a tuna can or other shallow metal can with a can opener such as a P38. Place a heat tab in the bottom of you new stove, light it and sit what you want to heat on top of it. Cooked a lot of C-rations on one of these... Fire starters are fine if you want to play the "Mountain Man" or just have to have a challenge. Gimme a child proof Bic lighter any day.

I do't follow on the smothered flame. What do you mean? The stuff I have is as hard as a rock. Is that how trioxane is supposed to be? U R right. Why am I making firestarters when there are tons of foolproof lighters out there.

If the heat tab is not getting enough oxygen to keep it's flame strong after having been lit for a while, it will give off fumes that can be quite unpleasant.

Didn't finish answering your question before I posted. Yep. The tablets are supposed to be hard. When they do start to break down or deteriorate after several years, they start growing crystals. Like salt crystals. Not to worry. They'll still work.

And trioxane lights up with just a regular match? Lights easily?

Lights easy with a match or lighter. Good for starting fires in damp conditions too. The flame will spread rather slowly so you don't have to throw it down if you're holding it between you fingers to light it. Otherwise just put it where you want it and then light it. No whoosh or boom. Just a light blue flame. Just remember that once they're lit, let them burn up totally. Remember what I said about smothering them. That includes trying to blow them out like you would a match. Bad fumes.

This might be slightly off topic, but CheaperThanDirt.com sells a fairly good emergency kit for camp or when you have a black-out. The Kit includes a 6" folding stove that utilizes Sterno canned cooking fuel, two 8 ounce cans of Sterno fuel that last 2 1/2 hours, six 9 hour mini candles, and one 60 hour pillar candle. Sterno is easy to use, odorless, smokeless, clean burning, and can be used indoors. All for under ten bucks. With the kind of weather we're having this winter, it pays to have a kit that will allow you to cook or heat items. Actually, a fold up Coleman stove should be one of your "just in case" supplies.

I made an emergency heater out of a one pound coffee can ( about 3.5" in diameter & 5" tall) by stuffing a roll of toilet paper in it (remove the cardboard center first) and putting a half of cup of alcohol in it before lighting. This is good to carry in your car in the winter, and if you have extra alcohol you can refill it after an hour or so. Makes good heat and you don't have to worry about the fumes. I set it on a metal pie plate when it's lit.
